Real repairs, diagnostic walkthroughs, teardown notes, tool tests, and practical electronics tutorials from the Norgan Technology bench.
Repair & Technical Case Studies
Some repairs are simple. Some technical problems are ugly. Some come in after another shop, platform, plugin, or system has already made a mess of things. The point of these case studies is to show how problems are approached properly: inspect, test, measure, isolate, confirm, then repair, harden, or redesign where practical.
- The HellofalaptoP – the huge burn and failure, and the recoveryToday I had an urgent repair come in. A HP laptop. It was a nice-looking laptop, Zbook, an 8Th gen. The customer had been concerned as they used it daily. I opened it up, tested the rails, and all were dead. I checked the battery, 12 volts, a good sign. (The battery label had 11.8v… Read more: The HellofalaptoP – the huge burn and failure, and the recovery
- Better than factory! To quote our friend, better than factory! But is it? Which plug did I replace? If you can correctly identify which one I’ll give you a 15% off store voucher.
- The laptop that died moreI got a HP laptop in this week which initially didn’t turn on. After removing the battery I managed to get it to start, but why? The battery? It wasn’t until I was testing the power and moved the hinge, then zap, puff, magic smoke.
Tools on the Bench
Good diagnostics depends on good process, but the right tools make the invisible visible. This section covers the gear I actually use in the workshop, including microscopes, soldering tools, thermal cameras, oscilloscopes, programmers, meters, and bench accessories.
Some links may be affiliate links, but the tools listed here are selected because I use them, rate them, or consider them useful for electronics repair.
Tutorials
These tutorials are for people who want to understand what is actually happening inside faulty electronics.
I cover practical diagnostic methods, tool use, testing logic, and repair thinking — from using a multimeter properly, to reading voltage rails, finding shorts, using a thermal camera, testing MOSFETs, checking charging circuits, and understanding why a device can look dead even when parts of the board are still alive.
The goal is not to make repair look magical. The goal is to make the process visible.
If you are learning electronics repair, troubleshooting your own gear, or trying to understand why proper diagnosis matters, this is the place to start.
